About SAR: The Sons of the American Revolution is a historical, educational, and patriotic "lineage" society comprised of male descendants of patriots who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774-1783. Mission: The purpose of the Sons of the American Revolution is "to perpetuate the memory of those who, by their services or sacrifices during the war of the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American People". Description: The George Rogers Clark SAR Chapter is the oldest chapter currently active in the Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and meets in Vincennes, Indiana. General Information: Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is open to any man of age eighteen (18) years or over, who is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who supported the war for American independence. These ancestors are referred to as Revolutionary War Patriots and include those persons who fought in the military and/or militia, who provided supplies to the American cause, who served on political bodies supporting the Revolution, who signed oaths of support and similar acts.

Virginia 2012: GRC President Robert Cunningham
is presenting the GRC wreath escorted by State President C. David Betzner
and District Vice-President General T. Rex Legler II (carrying the GRC Flag).
The INSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors in Vincennes, IN for the 234th Anniversary (Feb. 25, 2013) of the capture of Ft. Sackville by George Rogers Clark and his men. Photo taken as Compatriots were preparing for the ceremony to begin. Four of the guardsmen are members of the GRC Chapter.
On Dec. 30 between holidays and before the end of the year, getting out one more Flag Certficate at Terhunes Inc. - McDonalds in Muncie, IN. Manager Donna Jenkinson receives Flag Certificate from Mark Kreps, INSSAR Flag Chairman on behalf of the George Rogers Clark Chapter, where Kreps is a dual member.

The George Rogers Clark Chapter met Saturday, March 21, 2015 in the Genealogical Library of the McGrady-Brockman Building at 614 N. 7th Street (corner of 7th and Hart across from the Knox County Public Library).

Introduction of Members and Guests: Chapter President Robert P. Cunningham Anthony Storms, whose application has been approved at National, attended his first SAR meeting.
Previous Meeting Minutes: Interim Secretary Robert P. Cunningham read the Minutes. Kenneth Gilkey made a motion to accept the minutes as read which was seconded by C. David Betzner. A voice vote was taken and unanimously passed.
Treasurer’s Report: Chapter Treasurer Kenneth E. Gilkey reported a current balance as of February 24, 2015. His report was read and approved.
Color Guard and Other SAR Events: Chapter President Robert P. Cunningham listed the following Color Guard events: May 23, George Rogers Clark Wreath Laying Ceremony, Vincennes, IN (The George Rogers Clark Chapter will present a wreath; C. David Betzner invited all George Rogers Clark members to come and present this wreath; a total of 26 wreaths were presented at last year’s ceremony.) June 27, joint SAR/Reenactors event, George Rogers Clark’s Clarksville, IN homestead July 2-4, Conner Prairie Symphony on the Prairie, Fishers, IN April 18, House of Delegates Meeting, Fishers, IN May 23-24, Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous, Vincennes, IN June 26-July 1, 125th Annual Congress, Louisville, KY (On Saturday, June 27 the Color Guard and the Northwest Territory Alliance Reenactors will be drilling at the George Rogers Clark homestead and all are welcome to attend.) Registrar’s Report: Chapter Registrar/Genealogist Kenneth E. Gilkey reported two applications are being worked on at the Chapter level and two applications are pended at the National level.
Old Business: Chapter President Robert P. Cunningham reported that the Chapter had a $35 deficit from hosting the State Meeting on October 18, 2014. He said the State reimbursed the Chapter for this amount. President Cunningham also said he would give Timothy Johnson a list of George Rogers Clark members who have dropped out of the Chapter over the past 15 years. New Business: The installation of 2015 and 2016 Chapter officers was conducted by District 4 Vice President Kenneth E. Gilkey. President - C. David Betzner Vice President - Timothy D. Kenneth Gilkey asked if the Chapter has ever presented JROTC awards. Timothy Johnson now has the medals and certificates. He will contact the Commander at Lincoln High School and ask for the name of a recipient.

Program: Chapter Treasurer and Registrar/Genealogist Kenneth E. Gilkey presented the program, “The 13 Colonies and Flags”. He was assisted by his wife, Peggy Gilkey and Donna Betzner. Kenneth described many flags while Peggy and Donna held them up for viewing. He also discussed a Revolutionary soldier’s daily rations and showed us examples. Chapter President C. David Betzner announced that Robert P. Cunningham has been involved in the Color Guard at the local, state and national levels. At the Spring Leadership meeting in March, he was selected Color Guardsman of the Year. At the 125th Annual Congress which will be held in Louisville, KY, Robert will receive the gold Color Guard Medal. Only one of these medals is awarded each year.
